One of Johnnie’s first memories of visiting the Marshalltown hospital involved him, at the age of 3, accompanied by his father, climbing up the fire escape to secretly visit his mother who had just had his baby sister.
“At that time people were not allowed to visit so we met her at that back entrance,” Johnnie said.
Johnnie was also born in this hospital and his three daughters were as well. As a child, Johnnie was raised on the same farm that he worked on in his adult years. He farmed corn, beans, oats, hay, and had livestock as well. As Johnnie started to farm a little less, his wife, who was volunteering at the coffee shop in the hospital, brought to his attention that the maintenance volunteer was going to be retiring from his position. She encouraged Johnnie to look into the volunteer position. Johnnie did just that and started volunteering at the hospital in March of 2013.
Johnnie volunteers every Wednesday morning and he assists both at the downtown facility and the Medical Park facility.
“I spend time rounding up the wheelchairs and getting them where they go. I also fix and maintain the wheelchairs throughout the two campuses."
Johnnie enjoys having something that keeps him busy and he is glad to be able to help his community.
“If you are interested in volunteering, just figure out where to go, what to do, and plug yourself in!”
