Autumn Schmoker and Melissa Koch are returning to Marshalltown, and they couldn’t be more excited.
A new Women’s Health Outreach Clinic will open on January 13, 2020, within the Multi-Specialty Clinic at UnityPoint Health – Marshalltown located at 407 E. Main Street (adjacent to the hospital downtown). As a result, Schmoker and Koch – midwives who previously provided women’s care for local patients – get to renew some old relationships while building some new ones.
“I’m so excited to be coming back to Marshalltown,” said Schmoker, a CNM and ARNP who provided women’s care in Marshalltown for 3½ years before transitioning to Des Moines in September. “The hardest part of taking my new job and leaving Marshalltown was leaving the patients. I grew to love all my patients and was so sad that I wouldn’t be seeing them and being a part of their lives.”
For Koch, the new outreach clinic truly hits home. Born and raised in Marshalltown, she worked at the hospital in Marshalltown for more than 12 years (including one year as a midwife) before transitioning to Des Moines.
“It wasn’t an easy decision for me to leave the Marshalltown area, I have always taken pride in the fact that I was able to provide care locally to women,” said Koch, a CNM and ARNP. “To be able to return to my hometown and bring services that are needed makes me excited.”
The clinic is the result of a partnership with UnityPoint Health facilities in Des Moines and Waterloo. Initially, the clinic will be open 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Mondays, and it’s anticipated the clinic will add additional days of the week in the future.
The midwives will provide women’s care such as initial OB visits, routine prenatal care, gynecological exams, screenings and vaccinations, fertility counseling, family planning, and menopausal care. Babies will not be delivered locally, but the midwives will be instrumental in transitioning care to birthing centers in surrounding cities and connecting families with pediatric providers at UnityPoint Health – Marshalltown.
“I’m hopeful I’ll be able to serve some of my past patients again,” Schmoker said. “I had seen a lot of the women for their annual exams over the past three years, so they became a part of my life. I miss seeing them yearly, and I’m hoping they will start seeing me again so we can catch up!”
