UnityPoint Health – Marshalltown Area Paramedic Service (MAPS) is a premier emergency medical service that provides paramedic care to Marshalltown and the surrounding communities. A highly trained team of professionals routinely handle 911 emergency and non-emergency requests for assistance 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
UnityPoint Health – Marshalltown Area Paramedic Service is under the direction of Steve Vannatta, Paramedic and EMS manager. Vannatta is a second-generation paramedic with over 27 years experience. Starting as a Red Cross Volunteer at Madigan Army Medical Center in 1984, he learned early what it meant to be a street medic, having formed his roots around the early pioneers of EMS. Vannatta has been involved in all facets of prehospital care--from a fire-based volunteer, to managing high-call volume private and hospital based EMS services, to educating future generations of EMS providers and serving as CQI Director for hospital based and volunteer 911 services. He has positioned himself as a respected provider and leader with his knowledge and experience. In addition to his duties with the EMS Department, Vannatta serves on many committees with UnityPoint Health – Marshalltown, is a BCLS and ACLS Instructor with our Education Department, is the CQI Director for Marshall Counties volunteer EMS departments and is the current President for the Marshall County EMS Association.
The profession of “para” medicine has expanded beyond the ambulance as UnityPoint Health – Marshalltown’s EMT’s and paramedics work side-by-side with the physicians and nurses in the Emergency Department, Intensive Care Unit, and Med/Surg/Peds areas. Within these units they are able to utilize their critical skills which assist in keeping their expertise and knowledge at optimum levels in order to provide the best prehospital care possible.
UnityPoint Health – Marshalltown maintains a modern fleet of four ambulances that are furnished with state of the art equipment to enhance the capabilities of our paramedics and EMT’s, such as 12 lead cardiac monitors with transmitting capabilities so that physicians at the hospital can also see a patient’s cardiac rhythm and CPAP capabilities to assist patients who are experiencing respiratory distress.
